King of the Hills 2021

F3 Metro King of the Hills 2021 (aka “KOH2021”)

When Slaughter took over as F3Nation Nantan he said it was time to pour some gasoline on this spark we call F3.   Last year’s King of the Hills event was just a spark.  It was the spark we all needed in the most unique time in our history.  The 2020 event was spawned out of a lack of formal races, quarantine isolation last spring, and the need for a swift kick in the nuts to end the fart sack pattern we were all experiencing.  It reinvigorated the appreciation for fellowship and reminded us it’s always better to share in suffering and the bonds that shared suffering create.

Well, here we are 10 months later and the itch is back so we took a swig of gasoline, beat our chests, and spit it out on the firepit.   At that moment, the 2021 event was spawned.  Luckily, F3 Metro’s Sheep is a smart guy and didn’t drink the gasoline, so he helped craft a much better 2021 event.

I have no inspirational words for you this year.  If you participated last year, you’ll do it again.  If you didn’t, you regretted it.  You have over two months to ask for permission, block your calendar, and get your body right.

Sheep and I have cooked up some “enhancements” to the format this year.  Let’s call the 2021 version KOH 2.0.   We have improved everything about the event.  Shortened the name, changed the rules, added more competition … but we are still doing the SAME three routes.  BAM!   Full details at the bottom of this note but here are the highlights.

  1. Dates: April 24-25, 2021
  2. 6 Man teams – each man runs/rucks all 3 legs for a total of 18.3 miles
  3. Ryder Cup style point system – increases competition, head to head match ups for all paces, and another reason to talk smack
  4. Just like 2020 it’s an OYO event, meaning each team/individual will make their own schedule for running the three legs, record and submit your times.  Same three routes as last year.
    1. McHorsey-5.43 miles
    2. Sweet Six Mothership x2– 7.6 miles
    3. Bonesaw x10– 5.27 miles
  5. Winning team gets to babysit and polish the Runners Trophy (currently sitting in Checkpoints house) and the Rucker’s Log (current under What Did’s supervision) until the 2022 event.

To participate:

  1. Organize yourself into teams of 6 and select a team captain.
  2. Join the Strava club we created (works with Free version of Strava), the King of the Hills 2021 CSAUP. This will serve two purposes; 1) evidence you actually ran/rucked the routes 2) leaderboard for real time individual results.
  3. Once your Team Captain has been identified, contact me (Redd Foxx) to sign up, deadline to register is 4/17/21.  I’ll provide more details on how to submit team rankings (3 days prior to race weekend) and team times (during race weekend) to the team captains. It will be much easier compared to last year.

Finally, this event has become an epic instant classic, and it must have an event T-shirt.   The only problem is I lack design skills and artistic creativity.  So I’m putting out a call for the Pax to come up with a design for the back of a shirt (traditional F3 logo on front).   Submit your designs to me, Redd Foxx, by March 1st and we’ll pick one and get the ball rolling on a custom order.  If your design is picked, your entire team will get a free shirt (6 total).

Full Details Below.

Date & Time:

  • Weekend of April 24th
  • 12:01 am on Saturday 4/24/21 to Noon on Sunday 4/25/21 (36 hours to complete all 3 legs)

Teams:

  • Teams will have a maximum of 6 participants
  • A participant can only be a member of one team
  • Each participant must run all three legs
  • Each team member must have an F3 name (i.e., must have posted at least once)
  • Teams must be registered by emailing Redd Foxx at [email protected] by 4/17/21 with team Captain, Team Name, and all participants.
  • There will be a Run and Ruck division, same rules apply for both.
  • Ruckers need to carry 20% of their combined team bodyweight, split between the 6 team members. Honor System.

Routes:

  • Three Legs (Link to Strava Routes with notes on start/end point and other route details).  Each Start/End point will be marked. Pay attention to route details.
  • Consider running the Sweet Six leg early in the morning on Saturday or Sunday to avoid getting stuck at traffic lights

Scoring:

  • Teams will rank their participants 1 – 6 for each leg of the race
  • Participants cannot have the same ranking for more than one leg (i.e. Redd Foxx is #6 for McHorsey, he can’t be #6 for either of the other 2 routes. Adding up your rankings, each participant must have a min of 6 = (#1+#2+#3) and max of 15 = (#6 +#5 +#4).  So it’s on your team to strategize who will perform the best on each route and rank accordingly.
  • Participants will only be competing against the similarly ranked participants from the other teams on a given leg (i.e., a heat. #1 runner times will only be compared to the other #1’s, same with #2, – #6.  Competing “virtually” but submitted your time and we’ll plug it into the tracker to score it, however you are welcome to actually race in-person.  It’s on the individuals to organize that.
  • Participant rankings must be submitted by 4/20/21 and will be posted publicly for all participants to see by noon the day before the race starts, so you can self-organize any 1:1 matchups, break out the measuring stick, and puff out those chests.
  • Points will be awarded purely on a time basis based on the total number of teams participating
    • For example, if there are 10 teams participating, the winner of a heat for a given leg will receive 10pts. Second place will receive 9pts, and so on until the last (i.e., 10th place) finisher receives 1pt.
    • Purpose: This modification to the scoring system will allow the fastest and slowest members of the team to equally compete for points by going head to head with similarly ranked runners from other teams.
  • Bonus points will be awarded for first place in each heat based on the ranking of the heat. No bonus points will be awarded for 2nd or 3rd
    • For example, the winner of the 1’s will receive 6 bonus points (for a total of 16pts, assuming 10 teams as noted above). The winner of the 2’s will receive 5 bonus points (for a total of 15 pts), and so on until the winner of the 6’s received 1 bonus point (for a total of 11 pts).
    • Purpose: This modification is intended to negate sandbagging by encouraging teams to rank their participants according to relative speed.
  • If a team has less than 6 members participate, they must rank their runners consecutively starting at 1. (i.e., a 5-member team must rank their participants 1- 5, not 2 – 6)
    • If teams with less than 6 members participate, all heats will still be awarded points based on the total number of teams, regardless of the actual number of participants in each heat (e.g., if there are 10 teams, with only one team having less than 6 participants, the 6th heat will still receive 11pts for first place, 9pts for second place, etc.)
  • The winning team will be based on total points

Tracking:

  • Each team member must have a strava enabled device for time / route tracking
  • Join the King of the Hills 2021 CSAUP Club on Strava
  • Participants are not allowed to pause their Strava during a leg
  • Participants should do their best to ensure their Strava pairs with satellite before starting a leg in order to verify correct start/stop location
    • If for some reason Strava will not pair (we all know this happens) you are on the honor system to start / stop your timer at the correct location
  • Team Captains will get more instructions for submitting their team rankings and final times when they register their team, it will be much easier than last year.
