The BackBlast:

We played a little game today at Core Meltdown to take some of the edge off of the kettle bell pain. In honor of the SEC (the conference, not the Exchange Commission) putting 9 teams in the college baseball playoff the QIC came up with 14 songs by artists who have some connection with the member teams of the SEC. The pax were challenged to guess what all the artists had in common. The winner was The Rev who is all knowing about all things on this planet particularly when it comes to the intersection of sports and music. We played them all as we did the following: Start out with a quick warmup and then moseyed with bell in tow to the walkway around Freedom Park Lake. At each light we did one of the following GULTS: Goblet squats, Upright rows, Lawn mowers, Tricep Extensions and Swings. There are12 lights between the start and the bridge to the Nature Museum back entrance in case anyone cares to know. At the museum entrance we did some Mary and then moseyed with purpose to the stage where we did a merkin medley and a chorus of Superman mixed with Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire in the background. #ugly.
The adventure continued around the lake to Hippie Hill where we did partner runs up the hill. From there we moseyed to the obligatory shelter for step up, dip and derkin work before finishing up with a partner carry back to the AO.
Here is the playlist for the Southern music set along with each artist’s connection to a SEC school:
Don’t Back Down,Tom Petty-Florida-Tom grew up in Gainesville and worked on the grounds crew at Florida Field. At all Florida home games they play this song to honor their hometown superstar who died too young.
Cheeseburger in Paradise-Jimmy Buffett-Auburn-Jimmy actually went to Auburn for a semester and decided college life was not for him. Can you imagine checking in as a freshman and finding out that Jimmy Buffett was your roommate?
Song of the South-Alabama-The boys from Ft. Payne, Alabama personify the state and Bama claims them as their own
Shake, Rattle and Roll-Elvis-Ole Miss-The King was born in Tupelo just down the road from Oxford
Bo Diddley-Bo Diddley-MS State Univ.-Bo was born and raised in deep Mississippi near Starkvegas.
All My Rowdy Friends are Coming Over Tonight-Hank Williams Jr. Hank was born and raised in Shreveport, LA and his drinking music is played over and over in Tiger Stadium parking lots on football Saturday nights
What was I thinking-Dierks Bentley-Vandy-Dierks has to be the most well educated country music star ever. He actually graduated from Vandy. That fact will win you some trivia contests.
Achy, breaky heart-Billy Ray Cyrus-Kentucky-Not much good musically has come out of KY except Bluegrass and BRC is no exception
Ring of Fire-Johnny Cash-Arkansas-The pride of Kingsland, Arkansas I am sure Johnny was a Razorback fan growing up. What else is there to do in Arkansas.
Johnny B. Goode-Chuck Berry-Missouri. Chuck is from St. Louis which is in Missouri so that was the best I could do!
Only Want to Be With You-Hootie and the Blowfish-South Carolina. As everyone knows the original band was formed by students at USC East. Great story of local SC boys who made good and are still performing.
It’s the End of the World as We Know it-REM-University of Georgia-Another great story of college kids who met in Athens, formed a band and became millionaires. Crazy the number of great bands that have come out of the Athens, GA music scene
That’s Right -Lyle Lovett-Texas A&M- Arguably the Aggies most famous alumni is Lyle Lovett. He graduated from TAMU in 1980 with a degree in German and Journalism which proves once again that a German and Journalism degree is a ticket to success.
Back where I come from-Kenny Chesney-Tennessee-Kenny went to high school just outside of Knoxville and went to many UT games as a kid. I have friends that went to high school with Kenny and of course could never have predicted he would eventually turn into a country music superstar. The song hits home to me personally. If you grew up in the rural south you know what Kenny is talking about. It is a powerful message to never forget your roots.
That’s all folks. Thanks again, Blue, for handing off the keys! If anyone didn’t like the workout it’s the Site Q’s fault. 🙂
