The plan - standard "Greatest Hits of Ranger" fare: the hill on 10th St, Mutha, and Lizzy Lurker to finish with scattered exercises made up on the spot. The actual - a peer pressure induced catastrophe. Nantan of F3 Winston-Salem and purveyor of fine tobacco products, Frostbite, was gracious to join me for a field trip to visit my old compadres in Charlotte. I warned him to expect 3.5-4.5 miles of running and to acquire an insulting nickname from Cindy, neither of which happened. Sorry to disappoint, Frostbite! We started by running over to the bottom of 10th St with a pit stop at the wall next to the Castle where about 30% of us did dips and derkins. So far, so good. At 10th, we did squats at the top and bottom, with lunges in the middle, 3x. Next, Mothership. One time up, with escalating merkins at each gate, then core at the top until it was clear that the group would not tolerate any more, which was 20 reps of 2 exercises. I've never had strong resistance to peer pressure, as evidenced by the fact that I started smoking Camels within days of moving to Winston and meeting Frostbite. That came back to bite me today as Slice, in his charming and persuasive manner, suggested that we go deeper into Uptown to "show your boy". So we hop on the Skybridge, exit out a set of pee-smelling stairs, and head for BB&T. We maybe could have squeezed this in the allotted time but I again gave in to peer pressure and took the rail trail instead of College St. We timed it perfectly and ran right through a crowd getting off a train. Thin Slice and Gandalf almost got stabbed, which they both pointed out was fully expected since the media has made clear that there is a 100% chance of getting stabbed 0.001% of the time you ride the light rail. Once we made the turn for BB&T, half the group splintered and headed home, having lost their trust in the Q, who seemingly had forgotten how to navigate Charlotte in one short year. One time up, 10 merkins for those in the front, turn around and jailbreak home for everyone else. Those who stuck with the Q for the full workout got back to the AO around 4 minutes late, at a hair over 5 miles, and we didn't get to do escalating burpees on Elizabeth :( This was a poor Q performance but I learned some things: 1. Don't give in to peer pressure 2. Play psychological mind games with toddlers to get them to do what you want (thanks, Chalet) 3. Ranger has legendary mumble chatter but it's just not the same without the volume that Gitmo brings. Miss you, Git! Frostbite and I are excited to bring Ranger energy back to Winston. We will be holding auditions next week for the Cindy role.
