Years ago I met HE, he was heading off to Jordan for the US Marines after a workout at Indy. Nice guy, smart guy, fast guy, pure metro. Just high Impact, pretty simple. Last month, there was nothing more meaningful than the conversation our own HE shared at Christ Church. Some of us got to know him better. Beginning with the story of George's daughter, HE invited us into a deeply personal reflection on love, sacrifice, loss, and responsibility. As he spoke about leading Marines as a Tank Commander in Anbar Province, he didn't focus on heroics or accolades. Instead, he spoke about the men entrusted to his care—their families, their struggles, their courage, and the weight of carrying that responsibility. HE walked us through his deployments with the U.S. Marines and the bonds forged under extraordinary circumstances. But perhaps even more powerful was his honesty about the journey home. He spoke candidly about the challenge of returning to Charlotte, stepping back into everyday life, and learning how to be a father, friend, and neighbor after experiences that few can truly understand. For many of us, the morning served as a reminder that gratitude for our veterans goes far beyond appreciation for their service. We are grateful for men like HE because they continue to care—about their brothers, their families, and their communities. His willingness to share both his strength and his vulnerability was a gift to everyone in the room. Near the end of the conversation, HE reflected on the difficult transition back to normal life, recalling how he often had to stop and ask himself, "What just happened?" It was a simple statement, but one that captured the reality of carrying extraordinary experiences into an ordinary world. The room was quiet because we were listening. The room was moved because we could feel it. And the room was grateful because HE reminded us that true leadership is rooted not only in courage, but in compassion, humility, and love for others. HE, thanks for caring. SYITG See the replay here https://subsplash.com/christchurchcharlotte/media/mi/+vp9vhzb Newport
